In Episode #101, our series premier, we talked about the mysterious disappearance of Eugene Prins on 3/26/2020.

Eugene’s brother Colton, Mom Pat, and Step Dad Jeff spoke to me about Eugene and their efforts to find him. Here’s a summary of Episode #101

The Us census reported 655 people in Woonsocket in 2010, and since then two people have disappeared, Rachel Cyriacks in 2013 and Eugene Prins disappeared just this past April. We will be talking about Rachel’s disappearance in a later episode. Today we are telling the story of Eugene “Beaner” Prins.

I must start by saying that Eugene’s family are the real heroes in this case, if there are any! While doing research and interviews for Rachel Cyriacks case, Rachel’s mom selflessly arranged for me to speak with Eugene’s family. Rachel Cyriacks mother is a badass lady and had no hesitation to take this opportunity to help someone else in desperate need. That alone tells me everything I need to know about Mary! We’ll be speaking to Mary in an upcoming episode. I can’t thank her enough! I hope Eugene’s family knows how much we care. Even on the days when they must feel so alone in their search for answers, we care. We stand with Eugene’s family during this most difficult time.

Let me tell you about Eugene’s mom, Pat. Also a badass lady, who has been missing her son for 132 days (as of our recording date). She had a hard time speaking to me about the details surrounding her son’s disappearance. Which is absolutely ok! Eugene’s brother and step dad were there to speak to me. I’ll tell you all right now, any idea that Eugene just up and left to start a new life is bullshit. He just simply wouldn’t do it. At least not like this. He would never leave his mom hanging like that.

Eugene was born MAY 14, 1974… Eugene was quite a fighter according to his mom. Pat explained that Eugene was born quite early, and was just the tiniest thing. Which explains his nickname “Beaner”… His mom said he was very small, like a bean and could fit in her palm. So “Beaner” was born and it stuck.

***I find this the sweetest story ever!!!***

Eugene enjoyed music, collecting Beer Steins, and he and his brothers enjoyed various activities like spending time in the outdoors, racing, collecting monster truck memorabilia and mud races. Among many other things.

My lovely co-host Sereena and I are going to dive right into the facts of Eugene’s case.

On March 26th Eugene “Beaner” Prins agreed to help his friend take a log splitter to Fedora South Dakota.

Around 5-5:30pm Eugene and the friend stop at Eugene’s brother’s shop to pick up said log splitter. They also grabbed some ice and beer and stayed around for a short time to chat. Eugene and the friend left the shop and drove to Fedora.

***The drive would take approximately 25 minutes, if they didn’t make any stops. SO that would put them dropping off the wood splitter sometime around 5:55-6:15, I’m being a little generous with the time, in case they did stop somewhere. If there were no delays and they left right away they would have arrived at Doren’s Bar in Forestburg between 6:15-6:30. The drive from Fedora to Forestburg takes approximately 15 minutes.**

At approximately 7:38pm surveillance footage shows Eugene and the friend leaving Doren’s Bar in Forestburg this is the last sighting confirmed by surveillance footage. His family reported Eugene was last seen near a rural residence south of Forestburg.

The only surveillance camera at the time was facing the backdoor in the alley. Surveillance caught Beaner and his friend as they drove through the alley. That was the last confirmed sighting of Eugene.

There’s an article from The Mitchell Republic newspaper  that reported on April 8th, 2020

https://www.mitchellrepublic.com/news/5034464-Two-weeks-after-Woonsocket-mans-disappearance-search-remains-at-a-standstill

To date, there are no new leads about where the missing 45-year-old Woonsocket man may have gone, according to Sanborn County Sheriff Tom Fridley and Prins’ family members.

Fridley told The Daily Republic on Wednesday morning that the sheriff’s office, with assistance from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Mitchell Search and Rescue, tracking and cadaver dogs and civilians, has covered 36 square miles in the area of Forestburg, Woonsocket and Letcher and is now trying to plan its next steps in the search for Prins.

“We’re regrouping and trying to figure out our best use of our resources,” Fridley said. “… We’re still reassessing and trying to sort out. We’ve asked the people that’s come in and helped us for ideas, also, so we’re at a standstill right now.”

Prins, who goes by the nickname “Beaner,” was last seen with a friend at 7:38 p.m. on March 26 at Doren’s Bar in Forestburg. He was reported to have last been seen wearing a blue plaid coat, khaki pants, gray stocking hat and tennis shoes. Prins has dark, graying hair and a beard, wears glasses with dark rims and has a tattoo of his nickname on one arm.

At 9:11 The friend returned to Eugene’s brothers’ shop where he and Eugene had picked up the log splitter, earlier in the day. The friend reported to Eugene’s brothers that he had lost Eugene somewhere between Forestburg and Woonsocket. Eugene’s brothers really thought it was a joke, and weren’t concerned until later the next day.

March 27

8:00 am According to the friend this is around the time Eugene’s phone started going straight to voicemail.

***Cellular Data unavailable through trac-phone, the phone was an older model flip phone with no SIM card and very little location capabilities

Around 11:00am The friend calls Eugene’s mom and step dad to say he still hadn’t been able to reach Eugene

12:00pm  The family report Eugene missing to Tom Fridley the Sanborn County Sheriff

***The police were surprisingly responsive to this report and almost immediately they began searching for Eugene in the areas of Forestburg and the rural residence.

12:30-8:30pm They conduct a search of the area around the farm finding footprints that headed south from the farm but were covered by vehicle tire tracks before pictures were taken. They used a drug dog who turned up nothing, drones who found nothing and called in the HP 500 who found nothing. The search was ended around 9:00pm due to the weather.

It was relatively warm that week in South Dakota, causing some major snowmelt. It also rained sporadically throughout the day.  This caused water to cover the roads in some areas.

March 28th

Beaners brother and friends do an independent search and find nothing at the same time Sanborn County Sherrif department and Mitchell search and rescue had been doing a search them selves

March 29th

A 30 square mile search is held using planes, helicopters and atv/utvs.  Drones equipped with sonar technology, along with volunteers from woonsocket, and mitchell search and rescue were also present during this search.

**A very immediate and extensive search***

April 3rd

Eugene’s brother Tim, and a few family friends (including Mary Schabot mother of Rachel Cyriacks who has been missing since 2013) rented an airplane and flew over the James River valley in the area.

In the following weeks they brought out bloodhounds and Cadaver dogs who picked up a sent that took them to a stock dam. Beadle and Davidson county dive teams walked the stock dam and used rods to poke and prod the area they searched.

Still there has been no signs of Eugene and his whereabouts.

According to the family the friend took and passed a polygraph.

In early April (4/7/2020) firefighters responded to a fire at the residence of the friend Beaner was last seen with. Burning garbage in a burn barrel had gotten out of control, according to the Sanborn Weekly Journal.
